Ephemera
Journal, Volume II
A full appreciation of printed ephemera requires an understanding
of the history of paper making, typesetting and, most especially,
printing. The accurate dating of an item of ephemera is critical
to unlocking its value as primary information. Its paper, typography,
and method of printing are sometimes the only reliable clues to
its date of issue.
The authors of the two articles that appear in Volume II of Ephemera
Journal point to important historical relationships among new technologies,
business, and printed commercial ephemera. Jack Golden's article
is a continuation of "The Role of Printing Arts in Industrial Development,"
which appeared on Volume I, and Stephen O. Saxe writes about "American
Type Styles." Both articles are illustrated, mostly with color reproductions.
